The Pasty Pull

The Pasty Relay Race

Do you enjoy evoking gasps of "Holy-wah?!" by performing feats of strength in front of friends and family? Do you have an unnatural need to move heavy objects just to make others feel weak and puny?  If so, we've got a competition for you!
Join us for the first-ever (and maybe only-ever) Pasty Pull Competition! We're challenging the Copper County's strongest to harness pure pasty power to pull a truck as fast as they can down a street in Historic Calumet.  Wow the crowd during the 19th Annual Pasty Fest and take home the prize and win eternal glory.
  • Event Date: August 19, 2023
  • Event Time: 2pm
  • Event Address: 507 Oak St, Calumet, MI 49913
The Competition
It's you versus a truck (make and model to be determined). Contestants are harnessed to the front of a vehicle using a towstrap. You've got 5 minutes to get those legs churning to pull it down the 100-ft track in Downtown Calumet.
The Prize

The purse is $500 in Keweenaw Cash. Winner-take-all. Fastest pull across the finish line wins the prize.

The voting period will last for 30 days, and the top three pieces will be announced on Saturday, Aug. 19 during Pasty Fest 2023 in Calumet. The 1
st place winner will receive $300 in Keweenaw Cash, 2nd place takes $150 and 3rd will receive $50.

Pasty Fest 2023 is excited to partner with Upper Peninsula artists of all ages to explore our food heritage through art. ART PRIZE VOTING & INFO
Calling all pasty enthusiasts! Join in the first-ever Pasty Relay in historic Calumet. Teams of four will race to assemble a giant pasty through a four-stage gauntlet replicating the art of pasty making. It'll be messy, but its a small price to pay for everylasting glory.
  • Event Date: August 19, 2023
  • Event Time: 1 PM
  • Event Address: 507 Oak St, Calumet, MI 49913
The Stages
You've got four teammates and four epic stages. In the end, you'll have one giant pasty. Each teammate races to complete a stage relay-style. Do you go for speed or perfection? That's up to you.
  • Stage 1 - Short Crust: Get your hands dirty by combining and mixing ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
  • Stage 2 - Filling: Its rolling time. Use the Olympic-certified foam noodle to roll out that dough. Add the tasy filling ingredients.
  • Stage 3 - Pinch & Crimp: Get those fingers moving as contestants race to pull off the perfect pinch and crimp.
  • Stage 4 - The Bake: No pasty is complete without that sweet egg wash shine. So grab a mop and get to swashing. Then take your masterpiece and race to the top of Pasty Mountain to complete the course.
The Prizes
How do you win a Pasty Relay?  You've got three options:
  • Fastest Time: The team who completes all four stages in the shortest amount of time. It doesn't have to be pretty, but you better get each step right.
  • Most Appetizing: Listen, you're making a giant pasty with pool noodles and mops...it won't be a work of art. But heck, if it actually looks like a pasty in the end, you might win the beauty compeititon.
  • Best Team Costumes: This is all about team-spirit. Maybe you're not the fastest...and maybe you're not destined for the culinary arts, but dang it, you came up with a cool team theme and rocked a sweet costume. That's worth some recognition. Let your imagination run wild!
